Political Views 2011

During December 2011 I posted a survey here on muslimahMERICAN.com and circulated it online via social media to find out some of the political views of voting Muslims across the U.S.

Total number of respondents who were registered voters:  126

Ages of respondents:

  • Age 18-25:  25 total respondents
  • Age 26-35:  60 total respondents
  • Age 36-45:  24 total respondents
  • Age 46-55:  10 total respondents
  • Over 55:  7 total respondents
Respondents were asked which sect of Islam they most closely identify with:
  • Sunni – 101 total respondents
  • Shia – 11 total respondents
  • Sufi – 7 total respondents
  • Other – 7 total respondents

Respondents were asked if they voted in city/state elections:
  • Never:  21 total respondents
  • Yes, Occasionally:  42 total respondents
  • Yes, Regularly:  63 total respondents

Respondents were asked which political party they are affiliated with:

Respondents were asked how much news they watch on television each week:

  • 1-5 hours per week:  58 total respondents
  • 6-10 hours per week: 17 total respondents
  • 11 or more hours per week:  14 total respondents
  • I don’t watch news on TV:  37 total respondents

Respondents were asked to select all cable news networks they regularly watch:

Respondents were asked what types of political activism they regularly participate in:

  • Campaigning for their party’s candidate(s) – 12 respondents
  • Donating to my candidate(s) campaigns – 36 respondents
  • Advertising for my candidates- i.e. yard signs, bumper stickers, etc. – 23 respondents
  • Volunteering at polling locations – 10 respondents
  • Writing/Blogging about your political views – 36 respondents
  • I don’t take part in any other political activism – 58 respondents

Respondents were asked to select the top three issues that concern them in U.S. politics:

Respondents were asked how happy they were with their current level of political involvement:

  • I am happy with my level of participation - 34 total respondents
  • I would like to be MORE involved with the political process – 77 total respondents
  • I’m not sure - 15 total respondents

Respondents were asked if they would ever consider running for a local political office:

  • No:  60 total respondents
  • Yes:  31 total respondents
  • Not sure:  28 total respondents

Respondents were asked if they would ever consider running for a national political office:

  • No:  85 total respondents
  • Yes:  18 total respondents
  • Not sure:  22 total respondents
Respondents were asked if they felt that Muslims were represented well in U.S. politics:
  • No, we are not represented well in American politics:  106 total respondents
  • Yes, although I would like to see more representation:  17 total respondents
  • Yes, we have excellent political representation: 0 total respondents
  • I’m not sure:  3 total respondents
